Our Summit Centre welcomes its first residential group to their £4m redeveloped activity centre in the South Wales valleys.
Summit Centre has welcomed its first residential group to their £4m redeveloped activity centre in the South Wales valleys. The former coal mine has been turned into a unique destination which offers fully catered, en-suite accommodation with 104 beds, meeting rooms, an indoor climbing centre, café and fun outdoor children’s play area. The adventure centre offers over 20 exciting instructed activities. A gym and fitness centre will open later in the year.
The first group to enjoy the new facilities and stay onsite was Priory Church in Wales Primary School from Brecon, who brought their year six for a three-day adventure break. Trip Leader Miss Pugh said:
“The new centre’s facilities are excellent. The food was fantastic with a great choice for even those fussy eaters. We couldn’t have asked for any more from the staff with nothing being too much trouble. We loved seeing the kids pushing themselves out of their comfort zones and seeing them become more independent.”
Centre Director Rachel Allen said:
“We are so happy to welcome our first residential guests after many years of planning and hard work. The new centre will help us in our vision to transform young lives. It’s an exciting time for the region and also for groups from all over the UK who will benefit from having this stunning facility available to them.”
Summit Centre’s rural location in the beautiful South Wales valleys benefits from numerous off-site activities including; climbing on local crags, gorge walking through natural waterfalls, caving, canoeing, kayaking and eco warrior activities. This allows groups to experience nature first-hand and get a real sense of adventure and excitement.
The development at Summit Centre has been supported by £2.3m from the Welsh Government’s EU funded Tourism Attractor Destination programme. In addition to this EU investment, support has been secured by CORNWALL COUNTY PLAYING FIELDS ASSOCIATION through a consortium of other funds including Ffos y Fran Community Fund and Big Lottery Fund People and Places Programme and other non-public funds.
