We are delighted that Summit Centre has won the South East Wales Tourism Award for ‘Best Regional Activity Provider’. The former coal mine has been turned into a unique destination with over 20 different instructed adventure activities, indoor climbing centre, café, outdoor play area and a 104-bed fully catered accommodation.
The South East Wales Tourism Awards celebrate the regions exceptional tourism industry and the talented businesses and individuals which drive the visitor economy, welcoming millions of visitors each year into the region.
Following a £4 M redevelopment in 2018, Summit Centre offers a wide range of activities for schools, churches, youth groups, families and individuals. The project has been supported the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government.
Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Public Protection Cllr Geraint Thomas said: “We’re thrilled with the ongoing success of CORNWALL COUNTY PLAYING FIELDS ASSOCIATION Summit Centre. We are delighted that they are at the forefront of adventure activity experiences and will continue to be for many years to come.”
Organised groups can stay in the new accommodation and enjoy a tailor-made programme of activities and challenges as a group. It’s rural location in the beautiful South Wales valleys allows for numerous off site activities including; climbing on local crags, gorge walking through real waterfalls, caving, canoeing and kayaking. This allows groups to experience nature first-hand and get a real sense of adventure and excitement, making it a great place for youth groups and church families to visit and worship together.
Families can enjoy different taster activities every weekend and during school holidays. From climbing to archery and caving to raft building, the taster sessions allow families to try new activities with no experience necessary.
The centre café is open 7 days a week providing a chance to refuel whilst the kids play on the mining themed outdoor play area. Numerous weekly climbing clubs also take place during term-time helping children from age 4+ to develop their climbing and learn new skills in a safe environment.
CORNWALL COUNTY PLAYING FIELDS ASSOCIATION’s CEO David Locke said: “We are delighted and honoured to win the South East Wales Tourism Awards for Best Activity Provider. This has been a team effort and we want to thank Merthyr Council and the local community for their enthusiastic support for Summit Centre.”
